iPolish has unveiled its false nails that can change colour on demand. Users simply select a shade to match their outfit in the smartphone app, then place a false nail into a device so it takes on the chosen colour. iPolish is already accepting pre-orders and expects to ship its first kits in June.

CES in Las Vegas is full of curiosities. Among the products drawing press attention at the show are iPolish’s false nails, which could prove highly popular. Their distinctive feature is that users can choose a colour from a selection of 400 shades via a smartphone app. Once the selection has been made, each nail only needs to be passed through a device resembling a portable battery for the false nails to adopt the chosen shade, seemingly by magic. This means their colour can be changed to suit the clothes being worn.

iPolish false nails and on-demand beauty

“It’s beauty on demand, and it’s the future of beauty,” Lance Littell, iPolish’s senior vice-president, told Zdnet. “It’s the first digital fashion accessory to be brought to market.” The technology that enables these false nails to change colour has reportedly been in development for more than a decade. iPolish’s founder told TechCrunch that it relies on a new class of polymers known as electrophoretic nanopolymers.

A product due to arrive this year

For now, these on-demand colour-changing false nails are not yet available. However, iPolish is already taking pre-orders through its website, where it sells its “starter kit” for $95. The kit includes 24 false nails, the iPolish device used to change the nails’ colour, and glue. Deliveries are scheduled for June.

Replacements and nail reattachment

The company also sells replacement false nails, priced at $6.50 per pair. iPolish explains that its false nails are not yet designed to be reusable. Nevertheless, a nail that comes off prematurely can be reattached using the glue supplied with the product.
